Something on a Monday

This is something. Not something special, or something large, important, definitive, or finished. It is merely something. A token. A gesture. An offering. The perfectionist in me asks for a masterwork. A final rendering, autographed in the bottom corner, framed and declared art. This is something to shout down that crippling demon. This is merely something.

I began a three week unit on poetry this morning. We began with Akon’s “Ghetto” and Kayne West’s “All Falls Down.” I wanted to demonstrate that rap is crap and here is why. I ended up seeing that artists of all genres are capable of introspection and depth of self awareness. I learned something. My students bought in as well. Tomorrow we’ll begin to learn the terms to further dissect and discuss what humanity has expressed in verse.

It is contract negotiation time at work. That time of the year when contracts for next year are passed out and thirty days are given for consideration. The haggling has commenced, and I’m still not certain which path to take. The future looms. This past year, as the reality of a wife, child, and child-to-be begins to settle in, I have at times been gripped with fear as I realize just how much I have to lose. My life is so good; I live at dizzying heights. But the higher the height, the further the fall. My potential energy is extreme. Sometimes I wish I could be like Bukowski’s barfly who by having nothing has absolutely nothing to lose. I should be careful what I wish for.

Leaving school late last night after preparing for the week, I walked home to hearth, home, wife and child. As I walked, I craned my neck back as far as I could and stumbled like a drunk to watch the silent Northern Lights flow in green bands like water straight above. This is what it must be like for cold stream fish to look up at the flowing surface of water, rippling and curving around rocks in the current.
