Alone in Circle

Breakfast. Three eggs, because that’s how many are left in the carton. Two hopeful slices of dry white toast to absorb the golden runny yolks, but I’ve overcooked the eggs and little liquid is left. One plate. One knife and fork. One paper towel for a napkin. One coffee mug. The carafe of the coffee maker is filled to the six. Enough for one oversized mug, and maybe another half. Not to the usual ten – enough for two of our mugs, and a third to be split between us. I’ve made my coffee a little too sweet. We’re out of creamer so I use milk instead, leaving the coffee a little watery and bitter. I sit at the head of the table – not because I’ll be helping Jacob with his breakfast, because Jacob is not here. Not yielding the head of the table to Stephanie so that she can help Jacob with his breakfast, because she's not here. It is eleven o’clock and there is so much of this day left yawning before me.

Two people have commented to me about how lonely this post sounds. I'll be home soon though, then it's back to 10 cups of coffee and the side of the table! :-)
