Jacob loves to color. He has a round candy tin full of Crayolas and Stephanie supplies him with large sheets of white butcher paper like those used in schools. Stephanie has taught him to trace around objects, and he loves this. They started with tracing his hand, of course. Then her hand. His feet. A glass. One of his Hot Wheels cars. Anything. Every once in a while he will come up with something new he wants to trace. He will come to me or Stephanie and ask, “Color train?,” and we trace around his train.

Potty training has been going well with Jacob. He likes his big boy Thomas the Train underwear, and he likes peeing outside on rocks (and now lately, in the snow!). The only problem is that he has a hard time pulling down his pants on his own, so Stephanie has been letting him run around the house during the day with his bottom half completely bare. This way he can independently run to the potty and use it whenever he needs to.

Today, Stephanie left Jacob to color on a large sheet of white paper spread across the dining room table while she was in another room doing her hair. When she came out to check on him, she discovered him sitting on the table holding the tip of his penis between thumb and index finger of his right hand and pulling as far as it would stretch while he was tracing around it with his left hand. Stephanie said, “Jacob, what are you doing?”

“Color penis,” he said matter of fact-ly. She tried to re-direct him to the chair and to get him to color in a more conventional manner. She went back to getting ready and after a few minutes, came out again to check on him. Sure enough, he was back on the table making more tracings of his proudest member. By this time, however, I guess he’d been playing with it and pulling on it long enough to have a little toddler erection. He was even lifting up his scrotum to color underneath it. Stephanie again redirected him, this time to another activity altogether.

When I can home from work, Stephanie showed me the fine art that Jacob had created. Though she told me the story, I couldn’t quite see the source of his inspiration. It is obviously inspired, nonetheless.
