A Year in the Books

Heavy sigh. Relief. The school year is over. The summer has begun. Almost. This past week was one of the most stressful weeks of my life. When it rains it pours. This was the last week of school. Graduation was Wednesday. On Thursday, we’d planned for a cookout and other last-day-of-school activities. Graduation went really well, even though I was pulling things together at the last minute. There were many family members as well as extended family and friends from out of town who came in to see our students promoted or graduated. It is nice to see our gym filled with upwards of fifty people. We had our preschool graduates (two), eighth grade graduates (two) and graduating seniors (three) all decked out in caps and gowns. They entered to Pomp and Circumstance March. Blessing was given. Speeches were delivered. Diplomas awarded. Slides shown. Cake and punch consumed. It was good. I am relieved to have it over.

As I welcomed everyone at the beginning of the ceremony, I spoke about being at the last Circle graduation exactly one year ago. Stephanie and I (and just Jacob at that time) had come up to visit and get a look at our future. I think it was our superintendent who asked me to come up to say something of introduction to everyone there. And at Wednesday’s graduation I said that I couldn’t believe that a year had gone by since then. I feels like we’ve been down so many of life’s miles since then. Our lives have changed so much.

That evening, each of the graduating twelfth-graders’ families had a cookout/party at their house. Tired as we all were, Stephanie and the boys and I made our way down the road, one gathering at a time. At each party, we arrived, made a paper plate of baked salmon, macaroni salad, a hotdog, ribs. We stood around the fire, visited with friends and family and students, chased Jacob around the yard, shifted Toby from one hip to the other, swatted mosquitoes away, paid our respects and moved on to the next gathering.

The next thing? I have about three days worth of paperwork required to finish up for the year. I should be through by Monday. And then some of my goals must begin. I’m still planning on reading the Bible through. And hiking the Pinnell Mtn. trail. Someone recently told me there are no water sources along the entire length of the trail, and that I’d have to carry four days worth of water. I don’t know whether to believe that, but I’ll do some more research for sure.

I want to kick up my heels for summer, but this morning as I crawled out of bed, I saw the grey clouds and rain mixing with snow and just wanted to get back in bed.

I have started accompanying you in reading the Bible for the summer. I am now halfway through Genesis.
