Just Today

Finally home. Finally alone. We’ve logged thousands of miles on-road and off in the last couple of months. We’ve driven the road from Circle to Fairbanks I-don’t-know-how-many times, and we’ve had giddy smiles on our faces over every last mile.

We’ve done so much this summer. While we were in the thick of it, I didn’t want to stop and write new posts. I told myself I’d write when all of our company was gone. There are so many stories to tell, and I’ve spent the last week not knowing where to begin. The sheer volume of images and incidents gives me that deer-in-the-headlights feeling when I sit down to write. So I’ll simply write about today. I mowed. I’m not big on lawns, but I’ve been getting bugged by the amount of overgrowth around our place. I looks like no one lives here. And that’s one of the things I don’t like about Circle: everything is overgrown in the summer, and the whole place looks abandoned. That is the striking difference between Circle and Central, the other small town on our road. Central looks like a little town where people live. And so today I mowed down all kinds of weeds and expanded what is our “yard” by pulling out old fencing, cutting down small trees that started by happenstance as weeds, and making the place look like someone’s home. Plus I like working outside and working hard. I like seeing the results of my labor. I like that feeling of being sore and wore out all over. I can spend a lot of time behind a computer screen and desk and not even really know if I’ve accomplished anything. A cut yard bears witness. At least for a little while.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Stephanie and I are leaving the boys here in Circle under Gretchen’s care, and we are driving to Fairbanks for a bit of a date night. We’ll pick up Jamiee and take her to dinner (she is staying with a cousin in Fairbanks so that she can go to the fair every day. Yup, it’s fair time again), and then Steph and I are going to an Indigo Girls concert. We’ll drive about a third of the way back to Circle tomorrow night and then camp before driving the rest of the way Sunday morning.

Stories about blueberries, eagles, river trips, goldpanning, smoking fish, fireweed, boys growing like weeds, and autumn arriving will all have to wait.  (Oh... and there are new photo albums in the Photo Albums tab.)

Got a picture of how the yard looked like now after you clean it up?
