Rise and Shine

Sarah woke up this morning from her surgery. She looked around, saw her mommy and daddy, and she smiled. And we smiled. And we cried.

She has been breathing increasingly on her own throughout last night and this morning. After she woke up this morning and remained active for a while, her breathing tube was pulled out midday. She’s been doing very well since.

Along with the breathing tube, they also pulled off the oxygen sensor from her forehead, and they pulled off all of the tape that has been on her cheeks. She still has a multitude of other wires, tubes, and sensors, but the nurse swaddled her in a blanket that covered most of this, and what remains visible looks like a completely healthy, normal baby girl. We spent most of the afternoon taking turns holding her.

                                                                            *   *   *

Every new caregiver that comes in to see Sarah says the same thing, without fail: “Wow, she’s so long.” It’s uncanny. It happens every single time.

And if you know me and Stephanie, you can understand that the two of us are not likely to have a tall baby. The fact is, Sarah is skinny. Way skinny. She’s a normal length for a two and a half month old, but she still has the appearance of an infant. And so everyone exclaims about her length.

Maybe they are really thinking, “Wow, she’s so skinny,” and are too polite to say so. One nurse whom we have grown comfortable with did actually tell Stephanie, “That’s the scrawniest baby I have ever seen.” This didn’t make Stephanie feel very good. We understand she’s skinny. But food is on the way.

Steph and Brian,

Your last post just made me smile. I am sure Sarah will start gaining weight now that her litlte body is not having to work so hard at other things. I am so happy that she is recovering so well. I know it had to be so special for you two to finally get to hold Sarah again. I will continue to pray for all of you and look forward to more and more good news in the come days. Hugs, Heidi
