The Lion and the Giraffe
This summer, Stephanie hit a couple of home runs in the birthday cake department. Jacob’s dinosaur and Toby’s fighter jet were a lot of fun for her to make, and they both turned out really great. Almost in passing, she said to me after Toby’s party that I better not ask for anything too elaborate for a birthday cake for my birthday. And so, contrarian that I am, I asked for the most complicated and far fetched thing I could think of off the top of my head. I told her I wanted a lion capturing, killing, and eating a giraffe on the African savanna. She rolled her eyes. And without our realizing it, Jacob was paying attention. And he has the memory of an elephant.
So when Stephanie asked me a few days ago what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday, I didn’t have any strong opinions on the matter, by Jacob provided an idea: “Daddy wants a lion capturing, killing, and eating a giraffe.” Stephanie and I had both forgotten this joke spoken in passing from four months ago.
She and I both laughed about Jacob and his ability to recall such a minor detail. And then today, Stephanie came up with this:

It’s a homemade pound cake in a bundt pan with one inverted cupcake in the center to make it level. That Stephanie. She’s something.
