The Yukon Quest is a thousand mile dog sled race that starts in downtown Fairbanks on the Chena River.

One of the things I love about Alaska is that people turn out to enjoy all kinds of events. And the cold doesn't keep people at home. Here, families were out, pulling kids in sleds, bringing dogs on leashes. It was a festival.

I am always amazed by the transformations that take place in the winter. Here, a woman stands at a rail overlooking the Chena River where water flows and boats roar up and down all summer long. On this day, the town mills around on the ice.
