0002-June29.jpg
Wow. This baby's first photograph.
-
0004-June29.jpg
This wasn't quite the birth process we were expecting, and when he was finally here, I was simply overwhelmed with relief... relief that everyone was alive and well. All of my strenght and determination was bent on holding back the deluge of emotion. The nurse was trying trying to easy my mind by making chit chat. She was asking me what his name was, and all I could do was shake my head no.

After he was born, Jacob and I went to the nursery to give him the once-over and left Stephanie behind. He had wrinkly-squinty eyes, and alarmingly cone-shaped head and purple hands and feet with really long fingers. He wasn't pretty.

0017-June30.jpg
On his first full day, Stephanie took this in the hospital. This was the first picture we sent out to everyone.

0023-June30.jpg
I like the little cap.

What a wise old sage of a baby. He looks like a Kung Fu master.
-
0032-July3.jpg
This was his first bath in our apartment in Fairbanks.

0040-July3.jpg
Fresh from the bath.

0041-July4.jpg
This was the Fourth of July, and our very first outing out into the world. We went to Fred Meyer, where I carried him in the sling walking around for an hour. He was so small, I really don't think anyone knew what I had in that pouch.
-
0050-July8.jpg
He really screamed during those first few baths. He's grown to love them.
-
0054-July8.jpg
I think he looks like a plastic doll in this and the next picture.
-
0055-July8.jpg
Check out those splayed feet!

This is our little apartment in Fairbanks. A really nice place, and even nicer and bigger than our home in Fort Yukon!

Amazing summer weather in Fairbanks. We took a little family outing to the botanical gardens and large animal research station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. We saw the brightest flowers, largest vegetables, and reindeer and musk ox.
-
0104-July16.jpg
This is a musk ox- a bizarre looking ice-age creature that roams freely north of the Brooks range. This was taken at the UAF Large Animal Research Center. The resolution is dramatically lowered for web-posting, but you can see flies buzzing around just above and to the right of the animal's shoulder.

0106-July16.jpg
The sling. I first saw this kind of sling being worn by this crunchy hippie chick at a folk festival in Fairbanks. I can't belive how well it works, and how comfortable a newbie person must feel in it. Jacob always fell right to sleep in it.

0107-July17.jpg
Sweater-of-many-colors made by Jacob's Great-Grandmother Sluiter. It has been worn by Stephanie and all of her brothers and sisters.
-
0110-July17.jpg
This is the photo that is on my desk now, and will probably remain until Jacob is married and gone.
-
0112-July17.jpg
One of my favorites. I love his expression.

Since he's been a day old, we've been suprised by his wide open eyes and his constant eye contact.

Julius hold Jacob
Opa Julius was all too eager to hold Jacob while Brian and Stephanie went to explore.

Sleeping Jacob
He's a happy boy, and smiles even when sleeping.

Tres generaciones.

0183-July29.jpg
It'd almost be a good family shot, except the boy was just screaming. And damn, what a good looking daddy.

I loved this picture of Jacob rising from the bath waters, but his masculinity was a little distracting. The flower did the job.

For some reason, Stephanie likes taking those pictures that make him look all crazy eyed.
-
CRW_6830.jpg
Note the crazed expression and tighly gripping toes.

This one reminds me of a scared frog prince.

With the cap and the pinky, this one reminds me of a prissy slim shady.

Stephanie walks with Jacob among fall colors in the jogging stroller from Uncle Budi and Aunt Etty. Steph and Jacob have already put quite a few miles on that stroller.

Suzie made the trip to Fort Yukon to see us and our little one. She brought offerings of books, camomile and myrrh. And Jacob loved that Suzie.

CRW_7492.jpg
Susie stumbled across this black bear paw during an outing to the dump. I was suprised when she wanted to pack the thing back to Texas in her carry on.
